Sumi-e Workshop

  • 19 Apr 2024
  • 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
  • Gold Hill Police Station, Community Room, 955 W. Moreno Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80905

Learn the beautiful art of sumi-e, or Japanese ink painting!  Colorado Native Tei Kobayashi has spent the last 40 years deeply studying this art in Japan, and is here to share her knowledge this spring while she's visiting Colorado Springs.

Tei graduated from Colorado College, and began her journey into sumi-e with Gia Fu Feng at Stiilpoint ,a Taoist temple outside of Manitou Springs. She received her Master of Arts in printmaking, painting and sculpture in Florence, Italy at the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of the Arts. In 1982, she moved to Japan to study “Nihonga” (traditional Japanese painting using mineral pigment  with gold & silver leaf), “Sumi-e” (ink painting and “Shodo” (calligraphy). Her artwork evolved site-specific installation and performance in the Contemporary  Arts.  In 2010 she received the Platteforum Biennale of the America’s Art residency.  She has been exhibiting internationally for over forty years.

Special attention is given to each student so classes are limited to 10 people.  Classes are offered to experienced and non-experienced Sumi-e painters alike. The level does not matter as individual instruction will be given according to each person's interest and capability.

Brushes, Inkstones, Inksticks will be provided. You may bring your own materials if you have them. The cost of instruction including materials is 85$. This workshop is sponsored by the Golden Lotus Foundation.
